hi, as i explained at last night’s meeting of the listening lounge, i am organizing a large-scale interactive sound installation involving many cassette tape loops playing simultaneously in a strange and mysterious location within rock creek park in april of next year. it’s called RE-CONSTRUCTION OF A MONUMENT, WITH TAPE. to participate, you will need a tape recorder/player and some batteries. you will need to visit the super-secret location at some point between now and next april and make a recording onto your tape loop. and then you will need to show up there again the afternoon of sunday, april 6, 2008. email me if you want to participate. i will send you a blank tape loop and detailed instructions in exchange for your solemn vow of commitment.

The producers of Nano Radio have just posted Episode 3. These half hour shows are really great, highly recommended. This week, high marks for the traffic spoof and interview with Martha Baty, Chris Baty’s mom. Still interested in contributing a piece? It’s not too late, check out the FAQ
…from the quiet american:
“Surely you can spare a minute to clean your ears? Take a one-minute vacation from the life you are living.
One-minute vacations are unedited recordings of somewhere, somewhen. Sixty seconds of something else. Sixty seconds to be someone else.
A new one-minute vacation will be added each week on Monday if I can manage it (so far, there are 252 vacations).
Your participation is encouraged.
If it’s your birthday, this is your present.”
There’s whole new nodes of information to discover through the world of wildlife sound collecting, apparently. Cornell University’s Macaulay Library has “the world’s largest collection of animal behavior recordings—-Free.” They’re also interested in your recordings if you’d like to contribute; on that same page, they’ve listed some fairly comprehensive guidelines for neophite and advanced recordists. Gear up for the challenge of nabbing one of the Top Ten Most Wanted Recordings.

Third Coast International Audio Festival is seeking contributions for its 99 ways to tell a story project. A collaboration with Matt Madden and inspired by experimental French writers, the idea is to create under constraints. If you’ve heard of the burgeoning popularity of 48 hour film projects that have popped up, you get the idea.
The constraints:
lasts 2 min and 30 sec; starts with some manifestation of the sentence, “To begin with, they never got along.”; and includes the following sounds: a pre-recorded voice, a rhythmic noise and an exclamation (in that order).
As of the posting, they were up to piece #72. Additional details

While checking out the official page of National Novel Writing Month, I found that they have set up Wrimo Radio! They have a nice teaser audio up and are welcoming folks with an interest in producing pieces to contribute to the show. –Judy
